Tending to Spirit
e are not human beings who, on occasion, have a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings, each a child of Divine Power, having a human experience. And our experiences in the physical dimension are a direct result of our thoughts. Science is oh-so-cautiously concluding what the mystics have said for centuries. And recent clinical studies showing the placebo ("sugar pill") is just as effective as the drug for depression proves the point. 1
Usually it takes a crisis of one kind or another--often health--to wake us up to our Spiritual Self. Taking responsibility for one's body awakens Self to Spirit, and traditional medicine has always recognized the role of Spirit in healing. Consider the shaman of African cultures or "witch doctor" of Native American cultures. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views healing on four graduated levels, and TCM recognizes that the most challenging conditions require healing the Spirit to overcome illness. WomensMedicineBowl pays attention to the spiritual and emotional side of healing as well as the physiological.
Tenets of Self-Care
- My natural state is Wellness, a balance of exercise and relaxation for my body, mind, and spirit.
- "I am what I eat." Grandma was right. I listen to my body and eat only wholesome foods and no more than I need to maintain Wellness.
- With any medicine I take, I am an experiment of one, and I am the only one that matters.
- As the sole resident in this body, I am the one responsible for my well-being. Only I know what's happening in my skin, and only I bear the consequences of nurturing, neglect, or abuse.
- My body is a gift of the Divine Spirit, the only one I have in this lifetime.
