Health insurance is almost optional when you have the information and remedies to treat and heal most of life's common illnesses and injuries.

One in six Americans is without health insurance, most of them working adults. With health insurance costs escalating, every year fewer businesses are covering their workers. Every Boomer I've talked to about retirement has "being close to medical services" at the top of their list of where to live during retirement. Not me—though I'm no specimen of perfect health. My passport is in the top drawer—not far from the box of medicinal remedies that make it possible to pack up and travel and live abroad with security.

We have little choice but to learn how to take care of our own health.

Fortunately, the learning curve is flat—if you can read a chart of symptoms, you can choose the remedy. The only "new skill" you'll develop is truly listening to your body. That's a good skill to have for a long and healthy life!

Why haven't you heard of homeopathy? The AMA doesn't want you to know any tested, effective medical system that's an alternative to their pharmaceuticals. In fact, the AMA was organized in 1848 in response to the widely popular practice of homeopathy in the early 1800s and formation of the American Institute of Homeopathy two years earlier. In the 1700s and 1800s the treatments of orthodox physicians were so barbaric—bloodletting or huge doses of mercurous chloride to purge patients—that homeopathy—safe and effective—drew huge followings.

Best selling books in the 1830s: Homeopathy guide books with remedy kits!

Two homeopathy guide books with remedy kits sold for $5 and were best sellers in the 1830s. In the 1890s one in four or five physicians were homeopaths in New England, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest States. There were 22 homeopathic medical schools and over 100 homeopathic hospitals. Particularly the educated classes patronized homeopaths.

Ironically, it was one educated philanthropic family who attributed their long healthy lives to "avoidance of those chemicals" and to use of homeopathic medicines whose denial of Rockefeller grants to homeopathic hospitals began the demise of homeopathic institutions in the U.S. The Flexner Report, an evaluation of medical schools by members of the AMA in 1910, panned homeopathic medical schools; the AMA had allied with the pharmaceutical industry in the 1890s to finally stamp out "sectarian medicine". Again,
The AMA doesn't want you to know any tested, effective medical system that's an alternative to their pharmaceuticals.

Homeopathy is based on the Law of Similars, that is, like cures like. This principle was written by Hindu sages in the 10th century BC, and Hippocrates wrote of it in 400BC. A 16th century German physician reiterated the law, but it was a young, disillusioned, German physician Samuel C.F. Hahnemann who in the early 1800s tested the principle and used it to establish a medical system.

The "Law of Similars" is that a remedy can cure a disease if it produces in a healthy person symptoms similar to those of the disease.

Hahnemann wasn't practicing medicine long before he protested against the brutal and senseless treatments of his day. With as many as 50 chemicals mixed into a medical prescription, he called this "a degrading commerce in prescription" which enraged the chemists, and brought the curse of "heresy" from his colleagues. (Note: So what has changed in 200 years?)

Dr. Hahnemann moved to France and took up medical translation. When translating a lecture on treatment of malaria in which a Scottish professor of medicine claimed cinchona bark or quinine cured malaria because of its bitter qualities, Hahnemann questioned the logic. He knew other substances equally bitter, so he tested quinine on himself (small doses, twice a day) and recorded all the physical and mental symptoms that occurred for two to three hours. When he discontinued the "treatment" he was again healthy. This was the first "proving" of homeopathic medicine; homeopathy comes from the Greek homoios "similar" and pathos "suffering".

The "Law of Proving" or clinical trials—but without the disasters of drugs

The second law or principle of homeopathy is the Law of Proving, the method of testing a substance to determine its medicinal effect. To prove a remedy healthy individuals are given a dose of the substance daily, and each subject records the symptoms experienced——physical and emotional. Just as in double-blind clinical trials used in pharmacological experiments, half of the test group are "controls" and given an unmedicated tablet or placebo; double-blind means neither the researcher nor subject knows whether they're taking medicine or a placebo.

The scientific testing isn't done to test for toxicity. Since the first clinical test or proving done in 1790, there has never been a report of a lasting adverse reaction to a remedy. A remedy doesn't contain sufficient matter (plant or mineral) to act directly on tissues, which means
Homeopathic medicine is nontoxic and cannot cause side effects.

If you chose a remedy that isn't optimal it wouldn't fully heal you but neither will it harm you. A child could swallow the contents of an entire vial and suffer no ill effects. In nearly 200 years of use no homeopathic remedy has ever been recalled by the manufacturer. However, when the symptoms you're treating have improved reduce the frequency of the remedy or stop altogether; the body heals or corrects its imbalance naturally.

Potencies are created by successive dilutions.

Homeopathic remedies are prepared from botanicals and minerals according to the principle of potentization. The matter is subjected to a controlled process of successive dilutions alternating with succession (shaking), which may continue until no molecules of the original substance remain. The doses are called potencies; lesser dilutions are low potencies (3c, 6c, 30c) and greater dilutions are higher potencies (200c, 1m).

The higher the dilution the greater the potency—as contradictory as that seems. The power of minute quantities is understood in our nuclear age—though not in the 1800s. Critical elements in the body are in infinitesimal amounts. The thyroid hormone the body generates daily is 50 to 100 millionths of a gram, but a small excess or deficiency has a great impact on the body's well-being.

Does it work? Hundreds of millions around the world find healing with homeopathy.

In Europe, many M.D.s have homeopathic meds in their black bag (along with herbs and acupuncture). Drugs truly are the "medicine of last resort"—WMB's goal for American health. In Munich, homeopathic pharmacies are as common as the corner gas station used to be in the U.S.

I learned about homeopathy from another mom while at our children's environmental camp. After spending thousands of dollars on diagnostic tests and enduring 18 months of intermittent flu-like symptoms, I was advised that the affliction was Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and told to take OTC meds for symptoms, i.e. "learn to live with it." And I did until I was introduced to homeopathy. The homeopathic physician, another M.D. disillusioned with the "commerce of prescriptions," talked with me for two hours regarding emotional issues and physical symptoms.

One 2-hour visit to the homeopathic physician (an M.D. by training) and one high potency dose of a mineral, and I was cured of IBS within hours.

I wouldn't have another symptom for five years until I applied camphor on sore muscles. Camphor and coffee cancel the effects of homeopathy. I needed a second dosage in 1996. (How much coffee you can tolerate when using homeopathy for chronic illnesses depends on your tolerance, ½ cup one time to one cup a day for months.)

After my instantaneous healing, the decision to buy a kit of homeopathic remedies and guidebook to read the charts and treat all our family's ailments was a no-brainer. Since 1991, the homeopathic kit has been our "portable health coverage" during living abroad and in the U.S. since the youngest daughter was six. As a result, they didn't see a pediatrician often enough to be recognized by the doctor, and the courses of antibiotics the younger two have had can be counted on one hand, i.e., less than five.

The body has an amazing capacity to heal itself, and homeopathic remedies provide that little boost towards replenishing wholeness. Allow the body's curative powers to work and don't take any medicine unless it's making you (or your loved one) very uncomfortable. We recognize most of life's everyday illnesses and injuries, and they can be treated according to the charts.

The Uses of Homeopathic Remedies are as numerous as our human ailments for all ages.

Colds —For each one of us the early symptoms vary and therefore remedies vary, and as you recover the remedy also changes—if you choose to continue treatment. Homeopathic medicine works best if used at the earliest stages so pay attention and learn how your body works! Homeopathy can almost make colds an "eradicated" ailment.

Flu —The homeopathic flu remedy is reformulated each fall using the current viral strain—just as is the flu vaccination. In fact, the Influenzium remedy protects better than a vaccine—it's safer and more effective. A dose of the remedy can be taken once a month as a preventative. If you have symptoms take the remedy every hour for four hours until symptoms ease. Or if you've had the standard flu vaccination and it made you ill, the Influenzium remedy will help you get well. The French flu remedy Oscilliocossum has been used by 63 million people, and I always have a course of it in the homeopathic drawer during the flu season.

Headaches — Headaches most often afflict women, and they're not caused by an aspirin deficiency. The remedies to relieve headaches are as varied as the cause. When my 12-year-old was having reoccurring headaches I took her to the pediatrician for a work-up. Finding nothing amiss, the doctor declared that her physiology was simply different from mine, and advised taking pain relievers. Confident that nothing unusual was the cause, we returned to the homeopathic guidebook and kali bichromium became her routine healing treatment.

Indigestion, GERD — Carbo vegetabilis is the family's cure for most indigestion problems. At the onset of Gastro Esophogeal Reflux Disease, John took PrilosecR for about five days; the drug did stop the horrible 12-hour bouts of acid production but the side effects were blurred vision, headache, abdominal cramping, lower back pain, etc. He had to find another method for healing. One month's treatments of acupuncture was the cure, but for years now Carbo vegetabilis and reflexology maintain digestive health (plus paying attention to irritating foods).

Dental surgery — The dentist prescribed 200mg of ibuprofen 3x daily for 3-4 days to heal the jaw and said to return in one week to remove stitches. After two days of ibuprofen my liver was in serious distress, and when the week had passed the jaw wasn't recovered well enough to remove the stitches. Finally recalling homeopathic treatment for dental work, I took one dose of ruta graveolens, and my jaw healed more in the following six hours than it had in the previous 10 days.

Ear infection — my firstborn was on a diet of amoxicillin from five weeks until two years for middle ear infection or otitis media (B.H.—Before Homeopathy in our household); According to the specific symptoms, a remedy dosage is given every 30 to 60 minutes until improvement is well established (I owned an instrument to diagnose ear canals).

Colic — It's not just a condition babies outgrow! Colic is intestinal distress, and, depending upon specific symptoms, a number of remedies will relieve baby's distress and save Mom's sanity.

Homeopathic Kits for all Ages and our Pets

Homeopathic remedies, if stored properly, have an indefinite shelf life. Store them away from pharmaceutical medicines or any other chemicals, away from high temperatures and sunlight.
